Vico Equense, famous for its thermal baths and for pizza, also preserves numerous traces of the past: the Annunziata Church, the only gothic church on the Peninsula, Castello Giusso, founded by the Angevins and restructured at various different times between the 1600's and 1800's, and the interesting Antiquarium, where the relics of an archaeological burial site from 7th-5th century BC are exhibited.
In the hilly area of Vico Equense there are 13 Hamlets (villages). One of these is Arola. It extends over a vast area, which includes a stretch of beach on the Positano side. People here farm for living, producing dairy products which are still made to traditional recipes. The countrymen's houses open through stone decorated portals onto small inner courtyards. The square bell- tower stands out in the midst of all this rustic architecture. Next to it, we find the Church of Saint Anthony, which has also been restructured several times and is embellished on one side with a fine sixteenth century portal.
At Arola there is also Villa Federica, that welcomes you and wishes a very pleasant stay.
The city of Sorrento sits high above the sea on an imposing tuff outcrop with deep gorges. The houses are immersed in luxuriant green and surrounded by groves of olive, lemon and orange trees. The whole is framed by the high reliefs of the Sorrentine Peninsula. Sorrento is a tranquil place, to be enjoyed in all seasons for its mild climate, the perfume of its gardens and the panoramic terraces that give onto the sea.
Set into the mountain, surrounded by rich mediterranean vegetation, Positano is so picturesque as to seem a spontaneous stage setting. Seen from the sea it looks like a huge nativity scene, a waterfall of little multicoloured houses clinging onto its sides. Positano is a holiday destination appreciated for VIP vacations. The town develops vertically. The homes, one on top of the other, are characterised by arched porticos that give onto the sea, and are painted in pastel colours, giving it the look of a multifaceted precious stone. It is not for nothing that Positano is called "the gem of the divine coast".

Since then the volcano has been dormant.
